The new Ronald McDonald House serves as the ultimate resource for anyone with a child in an area hospital and replaces the older, smaller facility. The new building measures 65,000 SF, and is constructed on top of an existing six-story parking structure located adjacent to the Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. This much needed improvement to the previous 12-bedroom structure now features 47 bedrooms and has been designed and constructed under green standards and practices.
Barnhart Balfour Beatty took the lead in donating services to reduce the cost of the project for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. Barnhart Balfour Beatty constructed the building at cost - without profit. We also spearheaded an initiative to help save the charity building costs. This initiative brought together nearly 40 subcontractors who cut their fees, volunteered time and supplied materials. Personal ties to the community, a longtime relationship with Rady’s Children’s Hospital, and the desire to improve the lives of families dealing with seriously ill children, were the driving forces that help make the project a reality. By the time the building was completed, nearly $3-million in labor and materials were donated to the project.
