Fontana Park and Jessie Turner Community Center
Fontana, Calif.

Barnhart Balfour Beatty provided general contracting services to the City of Fontana to build the Fontana Community Park and Jessie Turner Health and Fitness Center.  The $49-million complex features a 43,000-SF senior community center, which replaces the old center, an Aquatic Center that houses four recreational pools,  a 25,000-SF Skate Park, and over 15 acres of playing fields and a multi-purpose pavilion for roller hockey, basketball, and special events. In addition, the park includes a variety of amenities such as a shipwreck climbing play structure, a dog park with space for both large and small dogs, three parking lots, an amphitheater, landscaped promenade, walking paths, several gardens and picnic areas that contain more than 1,000 trees and shrubs.

The architect incorporated an imaginative design when creating the 38-acre recreational hub, which features large concrete animals and other play structures dispersed throughout the park.  Frogs, ladybugs, a whale, a dolphin, and a pirates’ galleon “shipwrecked” on rocks are a few of the concrete structures where children can play.  In addition, there are four stainless steel kinetic sculptures that tower up to 18 feet tall and spin in the breeze. The sculptures are designed to spark the scientific imagination of youngsters and are engineered to withstand heavy use, heavy winds and hot temperatures prevalent in the area.

The American Public Works Association (APWA) awarded Barnhart Balfour Beatty the “2009 Public Works Project of the Year” for the Jessie Turner Health and Fitness Center.
